The approximate difficulty level for this tour
Day 1: Individual arrival in Rothenburg
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the epitome of medieval town romantics and has been immortalized by artists such as Spitzweg and Richter. Be guided through the town in the evening by the night watchman and learn all kinds of interesting facts about life in Rothenburg back in the day.
Day 2: Rothenburg – Ansbach, approx. 50 km (cat A) /
Rothenburg – Herrieden, approx. 50 km (cat B)
You start in Taubertal valley. It doesn’t take long before you reach the Altmühl river. A lovely alternative is the route via the nearby Altmühl spring (approx. 10 km longer). Passing the Zollernburg castle in Colmberg, you pedal to Herrieden and Ansbach.
Day 3: Ansbach – Wettelsheim / Treuchtlingen, approx. 60 km (cat A) /
Herrieden – Weißenburg / Wettelsheim, approx. 55 / 65 km (cat B)
Today, you cross the former Roman border, the Limes, and on a pleasant ride, pedal through the Franconian Lake District to your destination, either Weissenburg, which accommodates Germany’s biggest treasure trove of Roman findings, or the peaceful town of Wettelsheim.
Day 4: Wettelsheim / Treuchtlingen – Eichstätt, approx. 50 km (cat A) / Weißenburg / Wettelsheim – Eichstätt, approx. 50 km (cat B)
On today’s section, the valley gets narrower. The Altmühl cuts its way deep into the rocks and the twelve apostles – an impressive formation of the rock here – is waiting to be admired! You will continue to pass magnificent castles on the way to Eichstätt, a former diocesan town, with delightful Baroque architecture.
Day 5: Eichstätt – Beilngries, approx. 45 km
In Eichstätt take the opportunity before you leave to visit the Jura museum, which has lots of fossils of dinosaurs from the area. Your cycle tour today takes you through a juniper heath in Altmühltal valley to your destination, the charming town of Beilngries.
Day 6: Beilngries – Kelheim, approx. 50 km
From Dietfurt, you follow the Altmühl in the bed of the Main-Danube canal and soon reach Prunn Castle, which towers majestically over the river. In Kelheim you reach the end of today’s section – which is also the end of the Altmühl. From here it flows into the Danube. If your legs aren’t wobbling too much, go and visit the Hall of Liberation, which offers great views of the area.
Day 7: Kelheim – Regensburg, approx. 40 km + boat trip
Today, you can look forward to one of Mother Nature’s wonders – the Danube Gap, which you sail through on a boat. In the beer garden of the Weltenburg monastery, fortify yourself before the boat takes you back to Kelheim whereupon you enjoy a pleasant cycle ride to Regensburg. This town is considered Germany’s best-preserved city and has been declared a UNESCO Heritage Site.
Day 8: Individual departure or extension of stay
After breakfast, you start your individual return journey home or extend your stay.
