The approximate difficulty level for this tour
Day 1: Arrival at Santander.
A chance to explore the city of Santander: capital of the region and with a number of beautiful sandy beaches and plenty of history and culture.
Day 2: Santander to Santillana del Mar aprox 40 km.
Handover of the bike and cycle to the pretty little medieval town of Santillana to enjoy its perfectly preserved cobbled streets and stone buildings.
Also an ideal base for visiting the UNESCO listed Altamira Caves, famed for their upper Paleolithic period cave drawings.
Day 3: Santillana del Mar to San Vicente de la Barquera aprox 40 km.
A second cycle heading west by the sea, stopping for coffee at the pretty town of Comillas to enjoy its old university, palace an original building designed by Gaudi.
The day will end in the traditional fishing town of San Vicente de la Barquera for a chance to feast on wonderful fresh seafood.
Day 4: San Vicente de la Barquera to Llanes 45 km.
The sandy beaches continue along our cycle westwards as we leave Cantabria and enter the region of Asturias.
We will finish the day in Llanes: another traditional fishing port with an active harbour and many notable monuments and traditions.
Day 5: Llanes to Ribadesella 35 km
A succession of quaint seaside towns with wonderful sandy beaches continue as we cycle on until our destination today Ribadesella.
This town is also known for its prehistoric caves (Tito Bustillo) with paintings going back 29.000 yrs.
Day 6: Ribadesella to Villaviciosa 44 km.
History, beautiful scenery, nature and delicious local food (seafood, fish and artisan cheeses) are the key features of this cycle along the northern coast.
One more pleasant cycle will take us to Villaviciosa passing through an important wetland area of special protection for birds.
Day 7: Villaviciosa to Gijón 47 km.
One last day cycling close to the coast with more chances to swim in secluded sandy beaches will take us to Gijón, the largest town in Asturias.
This is an open, peaceful, cosmopolitan city full of charm and culture.
Day 8: Return home.
Extra nights at Gijón or Santander or travel back home.
This tour starts in Santander.
How do I get to the Starting Point? Buses every half an hour take 15 minutes to reach the Santander city center.
How do I get back home? Fly from Asturias Airport (45min bus transfer or 30 min private taxi transfer) or Santander Airport (3 hr bus transfer from Gijón).
Moderate. You will need to be in good health and reasonably fit. These trips may contain elements that are quite active, but not too hard. Accommodation will be very comfortable and pleasant.
