The popular tour along Altmühl cycle path leads through beautiful Franconia lake area and the impressing valley. Before you reach the UNESCO world cultural heritage Regensburg you make a detour by boat to the famous monastery Weltenburg and during the cruise you pass two narrow points.

Day-by-Day Cycling Holiday Itinerary


1st day: Arrival to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The city is the embodiment of medieval city romance and was perpetuated from artists as Spitzweg and Richter. Make a tour through Rothenburg with the nightwatchman.

2nd day: Category A: Rothenburg o.T. – Ansbach approx. 50 km

You cycle from valley Taubertal to the Altmühl origin in the former residence city Ansbach with precious rococo palace.

2nd day: Category B: Rothenburg o.T. – Herrieden approx. 60 km

You cycle from valley Taubertal to the Altmühl origin. Passing the castle Zollernsburg in Colmberg and directly to Herrieden.

3rd day: Category A: Ansbach – Wettelsheim/Treuchtlingen approx. 60 km

Through meadows and range land to Gunzenhausen, the centre of the Franconia lake area. In Graben you will find the leftover of a canal project which was planned from Charlemagne.

3rd day: Category B: Herriden – Weißenburg approx. 55 km

Through meadows and range land to Gunzenhausen, the centre of the Franconia lake area. In Graben you will find the leftover of a canal project which was planned from Charlemagne. Afterwards you continue to Weißenburg, famous for its roman excavations.

4th day: Wettelsheim/ Weißenburg – Eichstätt approx. 50 km

On your today’s bike tour the valley get narrower, river Altmühl cuts deeply into the Jura Mountain. Fortresses seem the way and Eichstätt presents itself as former bishop’s city in lovely baroque style.

5th day: Eichstätt – Beilngries approx. 45 km

Within a few kilometres you reach the reconstructed roman castle Vetoniana. You continue through a picturesque nature park which is coined through cedar heathland. Along imposing fortress Kipfenberg to the well preserved medieval city Beilngries.

6th day: Beilngries – Kelheim approx. 50 km

First goal is Dietfurt, here you reach the Rhine-Main-Danube canal. Fortress Prunn and the stalactite cave Schulerloch are interesting places of interest, before you reach the Danube in Kelheim. Already from afar you can see the Liberation Hall high above.

7th day: Kelheim – Regensburg approx. 40 km + boat trip

Today the route is short, but very interesting. You go by boat through the romantic Danube opening to monastery Weltenburg, which is located picturesque on a sandbank. You continue unhurried to Regensburg which applies as best preserved big city.

8th day: Departure or extra nights

We understand that well made bikes are essential for an enjoyable cycling holiday. All bikes are based on technology from leading Austrian bike manufacturer ‘KTM’ and serviced by an expert mechanic.

The bikes use good quality components to give you confidence in the bike on your holiday and comfortable riding on varied cycle paths and roads.

About the bikes

You will be given an easily identifiable, solid and sturdy aluminum trekking bike with V-brakes, solid wheels, almost puncture resistant tyres. Each bike has been built through continuous development and feedback from customers.

Each bike is also fitted with a dynamo lighting system for ease, handlebar bag, pannier, mudguards and comfortable saddle made by Selle Royal.

You can also bring your own saddle and adapter with you (diameter of seat post from 27, 2 to 31, 4 mm). We help you with the fitting of saddles and SPD shoes should you require assistance.

Gear systems

7-gear-bikes are equipped with Shimano NEXUS gear hub. Gears can be changed anytime even whilst stationary.

21-gear-bikes are equipped with Shimano ALIVIO derailleur. The ALIVIO system is robust and easy to use.

Frame sizes

The following frame sizes are available on tours with the bikes shown in the picture:

Unisex frame 21-gears with free wheel. Sizes: 56 / 51 / 46 / 43 cm
Unisex 7-gears-bikes with back pedal brake. Sizes: 56 / 51 / 46 cm

Men’s speed bikes 21-gears with freewheel and crossbar. Sizes: 64 / 60 / 56 “sloping crossbar” cm
(Must be reserved in advance!)

We will request your heights at the time of booking to ensure correct bike sizing.
