Cycle Route profile
The Tauern bike path is continuously and detailed signposted. The route leads through quiet and paved paths and country roads.
Partly you will have to cycle on more travelled routes. A few short stages you have to manage on unpaved paths. The quality of the trail can be described broadly as very good.
An ascending slope is hardly present in this variant and therefore the cycling tour is also suitable for families with children.
The approximate difficulty level for this tour
1st day: Arrival to Krimml
In Krimml you find the largest European waterfall. On a well-designed trail you can admire this natural spectacle. Your bikes will be available at the booked accommodation.
2nd day: Krimml – Kaprun/Zell am See approx. 60 km
Your route runs through the High Tauern National Park and the Oberpinzgau. Although snow covered mountains will constantly accompany you.
Lush green meadows alternate with lovely small villages and offer a fabulous scenery. In Kaprun you have the possibility to view the Alpine reservoirs
3rd day: Kaprun/Zell am See – Lofer approx. 50 km
At “Zeller See” (Zeller lake) you can take a refreshing bath or if you are a very sportive biker you can still insert an extra round. You cycle through “Maria Alm” with its famous pilgrimage church. You can enjoy the lunch break in Saalfelden.
Other highlights on your way to Lofer are the Seisenbergklamm and Lamprechtshöhe near Weißbach.
4th day: Lofer – Salzburg approx. 50 km
Today you cycle through the Saalach valley. Bad Reichenhall, in the “small German corner”, enchants you with Bavarian flair. After a short distance you have reached Salzburg, the city of Mozart. The cultural offer will embrace you.
You should plan enough extra time for a walk through the city and a visit of Mozart´s birth house.
5th day: Salzburg – Burghausen approx. 60 km
You leave Salzburg and its Alps and cycle through the Alpine foothills. The Tauern bike path ends in Tittmoning and from here you have to follow the nature trail along the Lower Inn before you reach today´s destination of Burghausen.
Outstanding features are the magnificent historic center and the largest castle complex of Central Europe.
6th day: Burghausen – Obernberg am Inn approx. 50 km
The route leads you along the river Inn up to Braunau. This gothic town is perfect for having lunch break. On your way you see numerous bird colonies.
You can cover the remaining way on the Bavarian or Austrian side. Today´s destination Obernberg has a well-known market square with many baroque buildings.
7th day: Obernberg am Inn – Passau approx. 40 km
Soon you reach the abbey „Stift Reichersberg“, which is worth a visit. On your route alongside the river Inn you cycle through small towns like Schärding, where you can make a break at the baroque market square.
Not far and you have reached the final destination of this beautiful bike trip: Passau. The city of three rivers has a lot to offer, for example the world´s largest organ in the cathedral. A river-cruise would certainly be the ultimate finish of this wonderful bike ride.
8th day: Individual departure or extension.
Entire tour along the Tauern Cycle Path which is well-signposted throughout, from Salzburg however you follow the local cycle paths.
You cycle on quiet, asphalted or gravel cycle paths or rural roads, only in parts moderate traffic is unfortunately unavoidable. There are only very few ascents to tackle.
