The approximate difficulty level for this tour
1st day: Arrival Bayeux
Individual arrival in Bayeux till the late afternoon. Personal welcome briefing and distribution of the bikes (if booked). Bayeux will fascinate you with its almost completely preserved town structure, which grew around the cathedral.
You can see well preserved town houses from the 17th and 18th century, which are even today partly owned by private persons, parish churches at the town ends and the Gerberviertel (tanner district).
The well-provided museum of the landing of the Allies is in the town just as worth seeing as the medieval tapestry of Bayeux in the Musée de la Tapisserie. The tapestry shows the history of the conquest of England by the Normans in the famous battle of Hastings in the year 1066.
2nd day: Trip to the landing beaches approx. 50 km
Landing beaches or D-day beaches are the beaches where the Allies started the invasion of France in 1944.
Omnipresent are the reminiscences of the offensive which ranged from Omaha Beach to the Pointe-de-Hoc. You cycle via Port-en-Bessin back to Bayeux.
3rd day: Bayeux – Caen approx. 60 km
In Arromanches you still can see remnants of the artificial port, which was built after Churchill’s command. Till Courseulles-sur-mer you stay at the coast. Then you cycle into the inland to Caen, the capital of the Calvados.
Despite the heavy destruction in the Second World War the town is a classic example for the reconstruction. The Mémorial de Caen is one of the most visited museums for the history of the Second World War.
4th day: Caen – Cabourg approx. 30 km
You leave Caen across the “Pegasus-Bridge” and cycle in direction to the flower coast. Famous and modest bathing resorts line your way.
In the calm bathing resort Cabourg Marcel Proust wrote his novel “In Search of Lost Time”. Enjoy the beach and the ocean.
5th day: Cabourg – Honfleur approx. 50 km
Through the region of the cider you cycle at first via Beaumont with its nice half-timbered-houses to Deauville, the famous cure and bathing resort with its extensive sand beaches.
Alongside the coast you cycle to Honfleur at the Seine mouth. With its pictorial port and houses from the 17th century the town became on of the most attractive ones in the Normandy.
6th day: Honfleur – Caudebec-en-Caux/surroundings approx. 45 km
Today you follow the Seine. You will enjoy a stress-free cycling through the scenic forest and meadows landscape of the nature park Boucles-de-la-Seine. The little town is located romantically at the Seine bank and has a conspicuous church from the 15th century.
7th day: Caudebec-en-Caux/surroundings – Rouen approx. 50 km
Today you will dive into the lovely river landscape of the Seine loops. The way leads through little sleepy river villages, vegetable gardens and orchards to Jumiéges, where you still can see relicts of the Norman monastery, which was mighty in former times. Cycling via St. Martin-de-Boscherville with its romantic abbey church St. Georges you soon reach the town Rouen.
With the grand half-timber houses, the narrow cobbled streets and the Gothic cathedral the town corresponds more to an outdoor museum than to a metropolis. Because of the Gothic cathedral Notre Dame with one of the most beautiful Gothic glass facades of Europe and many churches Rouen has got the surname “Town of the 100 church towers”.
The town at the Seine loop has a long tradition as a seaport. The old quays at the banks of the Seine, which is passable for sea ships here, are classified as an elegant promenade for strolling.
