The routes along the river Rhine completely flat, without any climbs. In the wine-producing regions you will find yourself on slightly hilly terrain with some steep climbs. Parts of the way will be cycled on nature trails.

Day-by-Day Itinerary


Day 1: Saturday, Basel

Individual arrival in Basel. You may have time for a stroll through this beautiful city situated on the upper Rhine, with famous sights like the Basel Minster. Embarkation will be from 3 to 5 pm. Your ship, the MS ANDANTE will moor overnight in Basel.

Day 2: Sunday, Breisach-Basel by Ship | or Breisach-Basel, Cycle Tour approx. 60 km

It’s your choice today: Either you step on you bike in the morning and cycle along the right bank of the river Rhine to Breisach, or you start your enjoy your first daytrip on the sun-deck of MS ANDANTE sailing to Breisach upon Rhine. The pretty town of Breisach is the center of Baden wine country with great wine and cava cellars.

Day 3: Monday, Cycle Tour from/to Breisach to Colmar, approx. 64 km or Cycle Tour to Freiburg, approx. 62 km

Today, the MS ANDANTE will moor in Breisach upon Rhine while you will hop on your bike. Possible destinations for today’s leg are either Colmar or Freiburg. Discover the marvellous nature of the upper Black Forest. In Colmar, the unofficial capital of Alsatian wine, you will see the well preserved architectural heritage from six centuries.

The alternative tour would lead to Freiburg im Breisgau with its marvellous buildings like the Freiburger Minster Cathedral and the historic department store on the Minster Square. (Possibility to return by train on own account). Back in Breisach in the afternoon you will get an idea about the importance of Breisach on a vineyard tour with wine tasting (excursion, optional, bookable on board).

Day 4: Tuesday, Breisach-Rhinau, Cycle Tour approx. 40-50 km | Rhinau-Strasbourg (Kehl) by Ship

You will cycle on French soil until you will reach the French village of Rhinau im Elsass, situated in a scenic landscape shaped by the Rhine River. From here the ship takes you to Strasbourg, the capital of the Alsace region.

Discover Strasbourg with its marvellous buildings like the cathedral of Strasbourg (Straßburger Münster) or the area known as “La Petite France” (called the Tanners’ Quarter in German) during a boat trip with a pleasure boat (excursion on one’s own initiative).

Day 5: Wednesday, Strasbourg (Kehl) -Gambsheim by Ship | Gambsheim-Plitters-dorf, Cycle Tour approx. 40 km

From Strasbourg, the ship sails today to the French village of Gambsheim.

Then, from here the trip continues by bike to Rastatt, the traditional Baroque town with two Baroque castles that are well worth seeing. Cycle to Rastatt-Plittersdorf. The district Plittersdorf is situated in scenic low mountain landscape and close to the nature reserve area „Rastatter Rheinaue“ (river plains).

Day 6: Thirsday, Plittersdorf-Sondernheim by Ship | Sondernheim-Speyer, Cycle Tour approx. 20 km

The ship will cruise to the village of Sondernheim in Palatine (Brick Museum, optional, bookable on board), from where you continue by bike, cycling to Speyer, one of Germany’s oldest cities.

The Speyer Cathedral, the Imperial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St. Stephen, was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Explore the impressive architecture during a guided city walk (excursion, optional, bookable on board).

Day 7: Friday, Speyer-Heidelberg-Mannheim, Cycle Tour approx. 30-55 km | Mannheim-Mainz by Ship

The splendid city of Mannheim will be today‘s first destination. The city’s Baroque castle is one of the largest in the world. From Speyer, either you cycle directly to Mannheim or you make a detour via Heidelberg, where you will find one of Germany’s most famous castle ruins.

From Mannheim, the ship will take you to Mainz, the city of Gutenberg, with the Romanesque Cathedral Saint Martin, lovingly restored half-timbered house in the Old Town and lots of other sights, all well worth a visit.

Day 8: Saturday, Mainz

Disembarkation after breakfast.

About the MS Andante

Last refurbished in 2008/2009, the spacious river barge MS ANDANTE promises a comfortable vaca-tion in cosy atmosphere. You will find the tastefully equipped lounge-bar and the dining room with panoramic windows on the promenade deck.

There are 17 cabins on the promenade deck and 29 cabins on the main deck, two of which are single cabins. (On both decks there are limited capacities for twin cabins to be used as single). All cabins (approx. 8-9 m²) are equipped with low level beds, dressing table with mirror, flat-screen TV, shower/toilet, individually controlled air-conditioning and opening windows.

There is a partially roofed sundeck with seats for the guests and a designed storage for bicycles. Look forward to meeting nice people, enjoy delicious food and interesting cycle tours, simply a nice holiday.

Important Information

Embarkation: from 3.00 to 5.00 pm • Disembarkation: After breakfast, until 09:00 am.

Bike hire on board: smooth-running 7-gear-unisex-city bikes made by KTM (custom built) with hand- and back pedal brakes and pannier bags.

Cycle Tours: Individual and self-guided. You will cycle about 30 to 70 km. The kilometres indicated for the cycle tours are approximate.

Cycle ways / level of difficulty: The quality of the cycle ways along this route is excellent. Most of the way is paved or asphalted and does not have any gradients of note. This makes the trip suitable even for unpractised cyclists.

Luggage on board: we recommend waterproof rain gear, bike helmet, sun hat and sports shoes. We would like to ask you to do without hard-side luggage as storage space in the cabin is very limited!

Alterations of schedule or programme: subject to change. In case that as a result of nautical, technical or meteorological reasons a route cannot be taken, the skipper reserves the right to change the route for your safety (this would not be a reason for fee-free cancellation).

Travel documents: EU citizens need a valid identity card or passport for this journey.

Special dietary needs and food allergies: inform us about your dietary needs and we will do our best to take them into consideration. There will be an extra fee of approx. € 25 per person/week (to be paid directly). Please inform us on booking.
