Cycle Tour Highlights

- Visit the Benedictine Monastery.
– The famous blue pothole.
– Cycle the trade route between Nuremburg and Augsburg.
– Audi Museum.

Cycle Route profile

The first two sections are slightly hilly and then the route takes a more level profile.

More athletically inclined cyclists will explore the entire length of the German section of the Danube from where it starts at the Schlossquelle to where the River Inn joins it. Enjoy the variety of the countryside and large cities, impressive cultural monuments and the charm of the area’s small villages. Despite the lengthier sections of this tour the two versions still give you enough time to enjoy the local delicacies.

Day-by-Day Cycling Holiday Itinerary

1st day: Individual arrival in Donaueschingen

You start your tour in Donaueschingen at the source of the Danube.

2nd day: Donaueschingen – Beuron, approx. 65 km

You cycle to Immendingen with the Danube sinkhole, where the river disappears into porous limestone ground for the majority of the year. In Tuttlingen the valley gets narrower.

3rd day: Beuron – Obermarchtal, approx. 80 km

The river flows between high limestone rocks and you cycle mostly right along the shore. You follow the Danube to Zwiefaltendorf where you should take a detour to the Benedictine monastery.

4th day: Obermarchtal – Blaubeuren – Ulm, approx. 65 km

Through the valley of the “old Danube”, the original course of the Danube, and to Blaubeuren with the famous “Blautopf” (blue pothole).

This is a karst spring and the beginning of a great underground cave system.

5th day: Ulm – Donauwörth, approx. 90 km

Most of the towns you pass today are located on elevations to save them from floods. In Donauwörth the formerly most important trade route between Nuremberg and Augsburg crosses the Danube.

6th day: Donauwörth – Ingolstadt, approx. 65 km

You cycle through extensions of the Franconian Alb to Neuburg where you should stop and stroll through the beautiful old town.

Don‘t miss a visit of the Audi museum in Ingolstadt.

7th day: Ingolstadt – Regensburg, approx. 85 km + boat trip

Through the meadows mostly right beside the river to Weltenburg.

Have a refreshing drink in the monastery‘s beer garden before you board the boat that brings you through the Weltenburg Narrows to Kelheim and cycle to Regensburg.

8th day: Individual departure or extension of stay

Depart after breakfast.

Map & Route Information

Route Profile
The cycle path is flat and follows the Main almost all the way to Würzburg. From Würzburg on you leave the Maintal and follow the Taubertal.

Here there is approx. 300m altitude difference to deal with, including a steep climb (this section may also be done by train). The section next to the Tauber is more challenging. The paths are in good condition, mostly asphalted and very well signposted.
